Awaseru — Kòrá
There are stretches of land in Curaçao where the earth holds a remarkable terracotta hue. When the rain comes, the ground darkens, drawing out deeper shades of red and brown.
This changing landscape informed Kòrá, named for the Papiamentu word for red.
Its terracotta sandstone body takes the form of a raindrop just as it touches the earth, a reference to the relationship between rainfall and the island's terrain.
Set upon American black walnut, the sculpture serves as a passive fragrance diffuser. Its porous sandstone accepts fragrance oil and releases scent into the surrounding air without electricity.
